The NC League of Municipalities is offering two trainings for elected officials on Dec. 17 in Long View. Together, these two courses provide a necessary overview of the requirements, responsibilities and best practices of local government officials. Whether you are new to public office or looking for a refresher on your roles and responsibilities, these courses are for you.
Fees: Courses listed below, will be $65 each or $115 for both. There will be a morning and afternoon course.

Rules of Procedure: Legal Basics for Municipal Governing Boards
Morning Session | 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
A course on the fundamental legal requirements of municipal governing boards. This course will teach you how to best – and legally – run a board meeting.
Official actions taken by cities and towns can only occur during properly called and advertised board meetings. Since many items come before the municipal board for action, official sessions of the board must be run effectively, efficiently, and in accordance with the law. This course provides an overview of the basic principles, roles, sources, and common problem areas for running effective municipal board meetings.
Objectives
This course aims for municipal officials (elected and appointed leaders) to apply knowledge gained to run effective and efficient municipal board meetings. Specifically, learners will:
- Recognize the seven fundamental principles that govern board meetings.
- Explain the roles of the presiding officer (Mayor) and Council in the conduct of board meetings.
- Summarize the statutes and local rules that apply to board meetings.
- Identify common problem areas that impact or delay board meetings.
- Implement concepts and best practices at board meetings.

Council Academy: Fundamentals for Elected Office
Afternoon Session | 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.
NCLM's Council Academy is a useful and important training for both new and experienced elected officials.
This training provides a fundamental look into the roles and responsibilities of council members and municipal governing boards. In this course, you will learn the basics and be able to immediately practical information to your position, identify the challenges of municipal governance, and begin effectively leading your municipality.

Advancing Municipal Leaders (AML) is a member-driven education program designed to provide continuous learning opportunities and help local elected officials be successful in public office. Through AML, municipal officials will learn how to meet - and exceed - the requirements of their role in office.
