Use of Force and Risk Management for Supervisors
The ability to make quick, life-and-death decisions is a critical skill—one that must be honed to prevent unnecessary use of force. The Use of Force and Risk Management for Supervisors course is designed for supervisors and others who are responsible for risk management.
Learn the four elements of reasonable force—knowledge, skills, decision-making, and documentation—and develop essential root-cause analysis skills so that you are able to differentiate between symptoms and causes of both successful and flawed use of force.
This course breaks down decision-making and documentation into processes that can be evaluated objectively. You’ll also learn how to request additional clarity and detail from officers/deputies without corrupting the process. This is an important skill to understand and practice. This assessment process can be applied to evaluate performance in all use of force training (BLET, in-service, remedial).
Attendees can also expect to learn how to mitigate risks associated with failing to train and/or supervise in training and field environments. This course provides an assessment process for de-escalation knowledge, skills, decision-making, and documentation. Learn the basis for evaluating force incident risk in the following areas: criminal/civil, employment, decision making, and stress management; accurate force risk assessment of incidents and training allow for better management and predictability of future incidents as well as managing on-going incidents. Become a more proactive supervisor with the understanding and skills necessary to provide management with a more accurate understanding individual force risk, as well as agency force risk management.
